Jyll Bradley

In 1960’s Britain over 160,000 children were ‘give up’ for adoption at birth through a closed system which denied them any legal right to their identity until adulthood. Artist Jyll Bradley was one of those children. Her new film M.R. is a tender coming of age story exploring the subject of childhood adoption, creativity and identity.  The story of M.R. is told through Green/Light (for M.R.), Bradley’s Folkestone Triennial 2014 sculpture installation which marked her return to Folkestone, where she was born and adopted. The film is narrated by Bradley and draws upon diaries she wrote as a young artist at a time when she was searching for her birth mother as well as a sense of artistic identity. M.R. is a story of an artist in search of her creative origins and asks universal questions about why we make art and how art in turn makes us.
