As part of a music x visual art project commissioned by New York’s venerable Orchestra of St Luke’s myself and creative collaborator Will Martin made a new projection work for seminal composer Steve Reich’s ‘New York Counterpoint’. Reich’s work was originally inspired by the rhythms of his native New York. However, when I first heard the music I saw not the buzz of a city, but the geometric growth of the hop gardens of my native Kent. Here Reich’s stunning music is set to animations created from my drawings of hops and hop stringing patterns. The performance is by world leading clarinettist Jon Manasse.
